These aboriginal peoples are characterized by their urban settlements that have lasted until the 21st century, by their civil and monumental architecture and by a complex social hierarchy. Some of these civilizations disappeared long before the arrival of the Europeans (15th and 16th centuries), and have recently been discovered by archaeological excavations. The mestizo culture of the Métis originated in the mid-seventeenth century, when some Europeans met with aboriginals of the “First Nations”.  For their part, during the first decades, the Eskimos had more limited contact with European colonizers.
